A Conscience of Lamentation

            An Old Testament book, Lamentations, records Jeremiah’s elaborate expression of grief regarding the conquered condition of Israel due to the rampant transgressions in the nation.  That overthrow was brought on by Israel’s holy Potentate as a castigatory response to Israel’s religious and political leaders who allowed God’s flock to go astray—themselves leading the way.  (More about that can be found in the books of Jeremiah and Ezekiel.)   Concerning evil, God’s holy, immutable character demands of himself justice with those he puts his name upon, as it was with Israel then and is upon the Christian Church today.  Though “God thundereth marvellously with his voice” and “great things...
